Assorted Links to Sites I Like
- The Super Dimension Fortress —
the (mostly) free public access UNIX system on which this site is hosted
- NetHack — The greatest computer
game of all time. You are required to play it. Starting now.
- Kingdom of Loathing —
a very good & addictive browser-based MMORPG mockery filled with obscure
pop-culture references, stick figures, and an active & friendly community.
I used to play it, but Real Life got in the way for far too long, my account
got deleted for inactivity, and I haven't felt like creating a new account
since. Stupid Real Life.
- Cities — like
Kingdom of Loathing, but with a much lower-tech interface, less pervasive
pop-culture references, exponentially more bad puns, and less of an overall
goal to the game. On the plus side, they won't delete your account for
inactivity.
- The Order of the
Stick — the best of the many D&D parody webcomics in
existence
- Gunnerkrigg Court — a
fantasy/sci-fi webcomic about an unflappable girl in a boarding school full of
robots, ghosts, demon-possessed toy wolves, mad scientists, and a cursed
teapot
- Dinosaur Comics — If you haven't
heard of this webcomic, you need to spend more time on the internet.
- The Internet
Oracle — A part of internet history, the Internet Oracle is a source
of infinite wisdom & knowledge in which the participants answer each
other's stupid (or clever) questions with clever (or stupid) answers. Although
its popularity has waned in recent years, the Oracle continues to endure as a
renowned source of collaborative humor & creativity. Just don't ask about
the w**dch*cks.
- Lojban.org — the official
website of Lojban, an artificial language designed with the goals of being
completely logical, syntactically unambiguous, & culturally neutral. If
you learn it, people will think you're even more of a nerd, and do ka'e
bacru je ciska secau lonu lo prenu cu djuno lo du'u do cusku makau.
- El Goonish Shive — a very
well-written sci-fi/fantasy webcomic involving high school, aliens, magic,
lesbians, goo, shapeshifting, mysterious shadow beings, alien
technology-induced gender swapping, evil overlords, long-running unsolved
mysteries, squirrels, magical nose beepage, and a demonic duck of some
sort.
